Hot Melt Tips
Keep Adhesive Clean and Dry. Both in storage and at the machine. Dust and other contamination in the system may cause char, plugged nozzles and shortened equipment life. Keep containers and reservoir lids closed. Damaged cases of adhesive should be examined to detect contamination. If dirt or dust is present discard the material. Shelf life of hot melt adhesive is indefinite if it is kept clean and dry.
Keep the reservoir full. Add adhesive frequently and in small amounts rather than allowing the reservoir to run low. This will result in reduced char on the side walls of the tank. It will also prevent chilling the tank (temperature shock) with large amounts of cold material. Erratic application and poor bonds result when the tank is chilled.
Pot life. Hot melt adhesive will degrade if held at high temperature for long periods. When extended down time is anticipated, shut off the unit or reduce the temperatures in all zones.
Preventative Maintenance. Observe manufacturers recommendations. Regular scheduled maintenance including draining, flushing, and replacing filters will reduce down time and equipment repair costs.
Periodically flush the system. Flush with the appropriate solvent recommended by the glue manufacturer. Flushing is indicated when char, plugging or discoloration of the adhesive is noted. Dusty environments and some adhesives will require more frequent flushing. The system will also need to be flushed when adhesives are changed.
Flushing Procedure. Remove nozzle from applicator. Applicator should be located over an appropriate container to collect adhesive to be flushed from system.
